What Is Ceramic Coating?

A ceramic coating is a crystallising polymer liquid that chemically bonds to paint, glass and wheels. It bonds to create a fine layer of crystal over the surface that will ultimately fight off outside elements and such that will degrade a vehicle's finish. Due to the crystal-like nature, a ceramic coating will also produce a nice gloss of its own league. In order to prepare for coating, the surface should be primed, e.g. decontamination and a buff.

Realistic Expectations

OP888 can resist the abrasion of a 9H pencil and provides high scratch-resistance. OP888 will provide you with high scratch resistance but note that this will not magically protect your car forever nor will it completely prevent scratches etc. If you are looking for something that will shield your paint from scratches, UV and stone chips, research paint protection film (PPF)

How Long Will It Last For?

Most ceramic coatings will last three to five years and it is recommended that you apply two coats to get the most out of the three to five years. There are a few factors into prolonging or shortening the life of a coating that one should note. The first two factors include how well you primed the surface and also how well you applied the coating. The last factor is maintaining it. OPTiX offers a range of products such as #NINE, Final Boost or Nano Slick, that will add layers over your ceramic coating to protect it further. Washing the car regularly, but not too frequently will also help prolong the life.

How To Use It:

When it comes to ceramic coatings, you can pay a car detailer (ideally OPTiX certified detailers) to apply the coat for you. Or you purchase this bottle and apply it yourself.

  1. Wash the vehicle.
  2. You will need to prime the surface - decontaminate the vehicle using an iron remover as well as claying the whole car.
  3. You will then need to give the vehicle a buff to make sure you have good clean paint to work with.
  4. Gather the necessary items you will need (in description).
  5. Apply a layer of coating.
  6. Allow to cure for roughly 4 hours.
  7. Apply second layer.
  8. Allow to cure.

FAQ

What is a ceramic coating? A ceramic coating is a crystallising polymer liquid that chemically bonds to surfaces, curing hard into a glass-like layer.

What do ceramic coatings do? Ceramic coatings cure to a hard layer on top of the surface. The silica properties make it extremely hydrophobic, which repels the water off the surface. This also aids with bird poo, bee pollen and tree sap, making them easier to remove as they don't stick directly to the paint. Coatings will also provide some UV protection and keep the car looking glossy for a while.

Why should I ceramic coat my car? Think of ceramic coatings as a permanent wax. If you are sick of waxing your car every so often then the longevity of a coating will be appealing to you. It is also significantly more hydrophobic so maintaining your car will be far easier. Overall as a product it is just better than wax but you are limited to the fact that you can not polish your car without removing it.

How long does a ceramic coating last for? Each manufacturer/company will list the lifetime of their coatings. There are however many factors that could either reduce the life or increase it. Factors like whether the car is garaged or not, cleaned frequently, using the right products, consulting with the installer and more.

Can I apply a wax over the ceramic coating? Yes but the products are not made to work with each other. Try sticking to sprayable ceramic sealants like OPTiX Final Boost to boost the water repellence and protection.

Will a ceramic coating stop my car from getting scratches? Not really. All coatings provide some form of scratch resistance, which is usually 9H or 10H. This refers to the grade of pencil tip used to see whether it penetrates or not. But for keying or bush scratches or washing, your car is still going to get swirls and scratches anyway.

Will a ceramic coating protect my paint from stone chips? Absolutely not. Rock chips will absolutely go straight to the plastic or metal if fast enough. The protection offered by a coating in this circumstance is negligible.

If my car is coated, can I go through car washes? Avoid any drive through car washes with the brushes and chemical sprayers. You can use touchless pressure washers as you are only rinsing the car and not brushing it. You should avoid roller washes as those brushes pick up so much dirt from hundreds of cars and rapidly scratch your paint as they touch it.

Could I use a clay bar on my coating? Technically yes, but should you? Not really. A clay bar will remove contaminants that are embedded in your paint however they are abrasive and can damage your coating. If you desperately need to remove surface contaminants try using a soft clay bar or mitt in an inconspicuous spot before doing larger, more visible areas. If you have had the car coated by a detailer, consult them first.
