M14 stands for 14mm metric thread. The size of the actual backing is usually measured in inches, there are a few brands do prefer to describe their units in metric over imperial.
The most common pad sizes that professional detailers use is the 6 inch / 150mm which requires a 6 inch backing plate with a hook and loop. The 5 inch / 130mm buff pads are the most popular among beginners, hobbyists, and the professional detailer because they like the versatility of the smaller pad.
The flexible outer base of the backing plate reduces shock, allows the user to have much more versatility when it comes to the pro who buffs on an angle. Allowing the backing plate and pad to bend and flex will reduce accidental over exertion, reduce the shock / kick back, reduce the heat in pads, and allows the user to contour the pad into all sorts of detailed areas, curves and better control.
Backings plates, 3 inch, 2 inch and 1 inch do not have the same flexibility compared to the larger units.
These flexible plates are not as necessary for marine, large commercial vehicles, large aircraft and panel shops as they are the for detailer and hobbyist.
